Wondering what kind of glue to use?

Got a pair of boring flip flops? You need some flip flop decorations! Add some glitter, balloons, flowers, ribbon and/or rhinestones and make a pair like no other.

Need some really fun party favors? These are sure to be a hit! If you're having a pedicure party, give everyone newly decorated flip flops to match their pretty feet.

Flip flop crafts are fun to do during a party too ... super fun for a summer party! Buy a pile of cheap flip flops at craft stores (Michaels), dollar stores, or Old Navy. Then supply all kinds of flip flop decorations, and have everyone come up with their own designs. Give everyone a drawstring bag to take their awesome new shoes home in.

And think beyond summer too! They're great for spring and fall, depending where you live. (Or maybe even year round!)

There are so many types of decorations. Try one (or all) of our ideas. Personally, I can never have too many pairs of these things.

These are also a great gift for your bridesmaids if you're having a beach wedding. Or have everyone go for pedicures before the wedding and surprise them with a beautiful pair of flip flops to carry their tootsies home.

  1. Detach flowers from their stems and position them on your flip flops prior to gluing. You can even take the flowers apart completely and remake them to suit you.

Ribbon Flip Flops

Stuff you'll need ...

  • flip flops
  • ribbon (we used two 3-meter spools for both shoes and had some left over)
  • strong craft glue*
  • toothpicks to apply glue
  • other embellishments

What to do ...

  1. Remove ribbon from the spool.
  2. Wrap the middle of the length of ribbon around the spot where the toe of the strap meets the sole.
  3. Wrap as tightly as you can, moving up one side all the way to the end of the strap. Overlap the ribbon by about half with each new wrap.
  4. When you reach the end of the strap, add a generous dab of glue on the side of the strap that won't show when you're wearing the flip flops.
  5. Stick the ribbon end to the glue.
  6. Trim the ribbon. (Nail clippers are good to get a nice flush cut, especially if the ribbon has frayed.)
  7. Add another touch of glue over the ribbon's end to keep it from fraying.
  8. Allow flip flops to dry completely before wearing.
  9. You could also add decorations to the toe area or glue some gems or other embellishments on top of the ribbon.

Glitter Flip Flops

Stuff you'll need ...

  • flip flops
  • mod podge or craft glue
  • paintbrush
  • glitter

What to do ...

  1. Brush mod podge or glue on straps fairly liberally. Work in sections so the glue doesn't dry before you add the glitter.
  2. Pour glitter over it covering the mod podge completely. Put a clean piece of paper underneath as you do this so you can pour the excess glitter back into the glitter package.
  3. Once the glitter has set, you can add an extra coat of mod podge over top gently to seal the glitter. It's best to dab it so you don't brush the glitter off.
  4. Let dry completely.

Balloon Flip Flops

Stuff you'll need ...

  • flip flops
  • 100+ water balloons (amount really depends on how far you take the balloons and how full you would like them)

What to do ...

  1. Choose your balloon colors ... one-color, two-color, or multi-color are all great choices. Try matching your flip flops or using completely different colors.
  2. Starting in the middle of the strap, stretch a balloon and tie it around one of the straps. Use a double knot. Be sure to keep the knots on the top side of the straps.
  3. Continue to do the same thing all the way around the straps of both shoes. Flip every second balloon so the hole of one balloon lines up with the rounded end of the next. Add balloons over the entire strap or just go part way out from the middle.
  4. Slide each balloon as close to the previously added one as you can. The closer they are pressed together, the more "fluffy" the result.

An alternative way to tie on the balloons ...

We found the water balloons we bought were a little too short to look puffy when tied in singles. Here is an alternative way to tie the balloons. This way is also a little quicker.

What to do ...

  1. Make a group of four balloons.
  2. Lay two of them one way and two the opposite way.
  3. Use a fifth balloon to tie (with a double knot) the entire group to the strap.
  4. When you add the next group, slide it as close the previous group as possible. This will make the balloons sit up.
  5. If a balloon still sits too flat, make a tie in that specific balloon.
  6. Continue down the straps until you have the look you want.

**A Note About Glue**

I used E6000 glue for some of these flip flop crafts. The gems and ribbons definitely seem to be stuck for good! Please be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions completely. I used it outside for maximum ventilation.

If kids are applying their own flip flop decorations, try a less harsh glue. I have used Aleene's Jewel-It glue on small gems and they are still holding.
